An Unforgettable Day: From Flooded Floors to a Cozy Campout
Some days are planned. Others… just happen. And then there are those rare days that spiral into chaos and somehow end up becoming memories we’ll laugh about for years. This was one of those days.
We were knee-deep in finishing touches on our new home—literally. That day, the to-do list was packed: putting up trim, caulking, and painting. The scent of fresh paint lingered in the air, and the familiar sound of tools echoed through the house. There’s a certain kind of satisfaction that comes from shaping your space with your own hands, even if it's exhausting.
Outside, the rain had been relentless all day. It drummed on the roof in a steady rhythm, and while we noticed it, we didn’t think too much of it. After all, rain is just rain—until it isn't.
Our two girls were out playing in the shop, which has a little loft they love to turn into a hideaway. We figured they were up there doing what kids do—giggles, games, maybe a little pretend cooking or crafting. Meanwhile, my husband and I were covered in caulk and paint splatters, fully immersed in making the house feel like home.
At some point, we took a break and decided to check on the girls. What we found left us both stunned. Water—more than just a little—had seeped into the shop. It wasn’t a puddle anymore; it was a full-on flood creeping up the floor. Somehow, the girls had been so caught up in their playing in the loft, they hadn’t even noticed.
The calm moment instantly turned into a sprint. Beds, dressers, boxes of who-knows-what—we rushed to pull everything up and out. It was a mad dash against the rising water, all four of us scrambling, slipping, and hauling whatever we could into the house. It was chaotic, a bit stressful, and honestly, a little funny in hindsight. Teamwork at its finest (or most frantic).
But here’s the silver lining: that night, surrounded by slightly damp furniture and the scent of fresh paint, we camped out on the floor of our new home. We set up mattresses and blankets, made a little nest in the middle of the chaos, and finally just… rested. The rain continued to fall, but we were warm, together, and in our home for the very first time.
That unexpected flood turned out to be the push we needed to spend our first night there. And though it wasn’t how we planned it, it couldn’t have been more perfect.
