Introduction to Potty Training
Bringing home a new puppy like my doodle Indy is an exciting experience. However, with this joy comes the responsibility of training, particularly in potty training. After conducting thorough research, I decided to implement a method known as bell training. This system is effective and helps to establish a clear communication channel between you and your puppy, paving the way for successful house training.
Implementing Bell Training Methods
The first step in our potty training journey was selecting a specific door for Indy to use each time she needed to go outside. This consistency is key. By using only one door, Indy would quickly learn that this is her entrance for potty breaks. To signal her need to go outside, I attached a bell to a string that hung down from the door. The bell was long enough for her to reach with her nose, making it easy for her to alert me when she needed to go out.
Using Treats to Reinforce Learning
In conjunction with the bell, I also introduced treats as a form of positive reinforcement. Each time I took Indy to the door, I would place a treat just behind the bell. While guiding her, I would say the word 'potty' and gently touch her nose to the bell. This association of the bell with the action of going outside would help her understand what was expected. After she rang the bell, I immediately picked her up and took her to her designated potty spot.
Once we were out, I would repeat the word 'potty' as she was doing her business. When she successfully pottied outside, I made sure to reward her with a treat. This positive reinforcement not only encourages good behavior but also strengthens the bond between us by creating a positive experience around potty training.
🐶 Key Potty Training Tips:
Remember—they're just babies!
Puppies don’t know the rules yet, so accidents are part of the learning curve. Patience is crucial.
Watch their cues
Sniffing, circling, whining, or heading toward the door are all signs it’s time to go out. Learning their body language helps prevent accidents.
Keep a potty journal
Track when they eat, drink, and go potty. This helps you spot patterns and anticipate when they need to go out.
Scheduled meals and water
Free feeding and watering makes it tough to predict potty needs. Scheduled meals and water give you control.
Water management
Offering water after play or hot weather is smart.
Cutting off water in the early evening (e.g., around 5 PM) can help prevent overnight accidents, especially for younger puppies.
Crate training helps
Dogs naturally avoid soiling their sleeping space. If the crate is the right size and the routine is consistent, it supports potty training.
Celebrate success
Praise and treat them immediately after they potty in the right place. Reinforcement builds the behavior quickly.
In Conclusion
Potty training can be a challenging phase, but with dedication and the right techniques, it’s entirely achievable. Consistency is paramount; use the same door and command throughout the training process. Additionally, patience is key. Every puppy learns at their own pace, so be prepared to repeat the process multiple times before your puppy is fully trained. With the bell training method and a handful of treats, you too can successfully guide your puppy through the potty training process, ensuring a happy household for both you and your new furry friend.
Note: This training method worked well for my puppy, but every dog is different — a different approach might work better for yours.
